Mike is the Chairman of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He retired from being Chief Executive of ONE North East, the Regional Development Agency for the North East, in 2003. Since retirement he has been involved in a number of major consultancy assignments usually relating to education and skills.

He was also a Non-Executive Director of the North East Yorkshire & North Lincolnshire Strategic Health Authority (SHA) from February 2004 until the creation of Yorkshire & Humber SHA in June 2006. Up to August 2009 he was a Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Audit Committee for the Yorkshire & Humber SHA and Chairman of the Yorkshire & Humber Advisory Committee for Consultants’ Excellence Awards.

From October 2005 until the end of September 2009 he was the Vice Chairman, and Chair of the Audit Committee, for the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. He continues to be a member of the Yorkshire and North East Regional Committee of the National Trust.

His career in public service spans over 40 years, including 17 in local Government and 16 years in the NHS in the North West of England and north of the border.

In 1978 he was appointed Treasurer to the Mersey Regional Health Authority, in 1985 the District General Manager for Liverpool Health Authority and in the early 90s he was the Director of Finance for the NHS in Scotland.

He moved to Yorkshire in 1994 when he became Chief Executive of the Funding Agency for Schools. He was awarded the CBE for services to Education in 1999. In 1999 he was appointed as the first Chief Executive of ONE North East.

He is a qualified accountant and former President of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.
