Service summary:

Gastro-Intestinal Services incorporates a joint medical and surgical approach to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases including cancer. The aim is to provide a patient focused approach to GI diseases.

There are two main GI centres currently provided at St James’s Hospital and the LGI. They are supported by elective inpatient and outpatient services at Seacroft, Wharfedale and Chapel Allerton Hospitals, including endoscopy, radiology and laboratory services. The Trust provides an acute, elective, secondary and tertiary service.

Procedures currently undertaken in the Endoscopy department are

  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Endoscopy
  • Cystoscopy
  • Hysteroscopy, colposcopy and rigid sigmoidoscopies are performed in the out patient department

The Endoscopy department offer a direct access service for upper GI endoscopies, other referral for Colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopies and cystoscopies is by a consultant referral to RBS.

Current waiting times for non urgent procedures currently stands at approximately 6- 8 weeks.
