Other Information

Blood glucose meters and test strips are affected by extremes of temperature and may not work in very hot or very cold weather.

Insulin needs to be kept cool but not frozen.  Carry in a cool bag whilst travelling and store in a fridge or cool cupboard.  Do not carry insulin in your suitcase if you are flying, as it will freeze in the hold of the plane.

Insulin Pumps

You must not allow Customs to put your pump through the x-ray machine as it can cause pump failure.   You should be allowed to wear it as you walk through the metal detector.   Make sure you have the emergency contact number in case your pump fails.  Most companies will arrange for replacement pumps to be delivered very quickly.  Do not forget to always take with you insulin for use in emergency and check with your Diabetes Team you know what to do if your pump fails.  It is useful to take a letter explaining how the pump works and you can obtain the letter by clicking here.
