Summer 2005 newsletter

Hello and welcome

Holidays

That long break from school is almost upon us again. If you are planning your holiday to somewhere sunny and exotic then please don't hesitate to contact your Diabetes Team for travel advice, managing insulin across time zones and caring for pumps.

Medical Devices Alert

  1. Medisense Optium Exceed, Therasense Freestyle Mini and Therasense Freestyle Blood Glucose Meters.

If you use one of the above meters, please can you make sure that the meter is reading mmol/L each time it is used. If it is not, instructions on how to change the unit of measurement are available in the operating manual or by contacting the manufacturer.

  1. Needlestick injury from pen needles

In order to avoid injury from used pen needles, it is advisable to use the larger outer caps to remove the needle from the pen device and then dispose of the needle into the sharps bin (yellow box).

If a child is in hospital then staff will request, where possible, that the patient, parent or carer dispose of the needle as outlined above. This is to minimise the risk of needlestick injury to staff, patients and parents alike.

We are liaising with the various companies who make the needles to see if there is any better and safer way of managing safe removal and disposal.

If you have any questions regarding this issue or the blood glucose meters, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Actrapid penfill (3ml cartridge) Discontinuation

NovoNordisk announced in May that they are going to discontinue the above insulin cartridge by the end of December 2005. It will still be available in 10ml vials.

If you are affected by this withdrawal, please either contact us or see us in clinic to discuss a suitable alternative. We are meeting with representatives from NovoNordisk to discuss this further.

Adolescent Transfer Clinics LGI Site

From July 2005 a monthly transfer clinic will take place in the Diabetes Centre. This is a nurse led clinic held jointly with the Children's Diabetes Nurse Specialists, Adult Diabetes Nurse Specialist and the Paediatric Dietitian. Young people who are about to formally transfer to the adult service will be invited so that they can meet their new Nurse Specialist and their care can transferred in a more holistic way.

Website

The Leeds Children's Diabetes Team are designing a fantastic new website with who's who, quizzes (with prizes) and lots of information. The website will be launched at our parents evening and the website address will be given out then.

If you have any great ideas you think should be on the website why not write them down and send them to us?

Once again we are just a call, note, e-mail or a text away. We welcome your views, suggestions and comments so let us know what you think.

St James clinic appointments

Unfortunately we are still experiencing a few problems with the clinic booking system. If you do not receive an appointment at least every three months please contact the Children's Diabetes Team on 0113 2066604.

Planned surgical operations

If you are coming to hospital for an operation please let us know in advance so that your insulin regime can be amended accordingly.

Insulin pumps

In February 2006 the National Institute for clinical excellance (NICE) will review the guidance on who is eligible for insulin pump therapy. As there is very little medical evidence on how they may improve quality of life and lifestyle it may have some influence if those children and families using pumps write or email nice.org.uk to share their views. YOU are a very powerful group in influencing future pump policy.

DUK Leeds support group (adults and children)

This group is just being reformed and are planning to re-launch later in the year. If you are interested in finding out more please contact 07840 686618 (leave a message and someone will ring you back) or email diabetesleeds@hotmail.co.uk
