School sports

If you are taking part in sport, such as netball or football match at another school, it's a good idea to let the person running it know about your diabetes.

If you are having a sports day, it's also important to inform your sports teacher or form teacher if they don't already know.

Again, there is no reason why you can't do sports at school but it's always safe to inform people in case of an emergency.  If you are not sure what to do whilst playing sports, speak to your Diabetes Team or Dietitian and they will help you out.

Hypos after physical sports

Hypos can happen up to 36 hours after a lot of physical activity.  That is a long time and it's because when you have stopped being active, muscles will still continue to use extra glucose to replace their stores.  This means that it's important that you have plenty of starchy carbohydrates at your next meal or snack, such as a sandwich etc.  It's a good idea to eat within an hour after finishing an activity, and always have a good supper at bedtime to help your body build up its stores.  For more information on hypos click here
