Acute Admissions to Hospital Following Injury or Illness

  • Inform hospital on arrival that you have diabetes
  • Advise type of insulin regimen and bring blood testing equipment into hospital
  • Ask staff in A&E to immediately inform The Diabetes Team
  • If you are told to starve because of surgery make sure the staff understand about hypos and the need for an appropriate plan for continuing glucose and insulin - check they have informed The Diabetes Team
  • If possible stay with your child and monitor blood sugars hourly and inform staff if you are concerned.  Do not hesitate to discuss with the nursing staff the management of diabetes
  • We strongly advise that all people with diabetes should wear an identity bracelet (click here for information)
