Guide to Insulins

Insulin Regimens

There are several different insulin regimens all with advantages and disadvantages.   This page sets out the advantages and disadvantages of the common regimens and explains the policy of the Leeds Children's Diabetes Team and what we normally recommend.

In considering the different regimens, it is important to understand that the aim is to maximise control (good HbA1c), minimise hypos and allow a normal lifestyle as much as possible.  Healthy eating is an important part of diabetes management and it is difficult to talk about insulin without also discussing food.  If you want to learn more about food and carbohydrates (CHO) click here.  It is also important to understand that all regimens require the careful monitoring of blood glucose levels.

To understand the different regimens, it is important to also understand the different insulins. To obtain more details on the different insulins click here.
