Planning ahead

Planning ahead

If you know what you want to do you probably have things in place to start at work or college.  Here are a couple of things to think about: -

If you are not too sure but want to start a career: -

  1. Try your hardest at school to get the best grades you can
  2. Whilst at school it is best to try and speak to an adviser and see what your options are.
  3. Try and think what career would suit you best or have a really hard think about the future.
  4. If you are still not sure try attending open days at colleges/universities.  Open days are excellent to find out about all different courses available and what grades you need to start the course.  This may give you a better idea on what you want to do.  Try a couple of colleges as they all do different courses.
  5. Once you know what course you want to do, enrol on the course and the tutors will give you all the information you need to know i.e. when you start, what equipment you will need etc.

If you just want to get stuck into work: -

  1. If you are not sure what sort of job you want to do, then you probably should go to the job centre.  The job centre is very good at looking what sort of jobs are available and there are also advisers to speak to.
  2. If you know what job you want but not too sure how to get it, try looking in the Evening post on a Thursday as they have lots of different jobs.  You can also join an agency which will arrange work for you.

If you know exactly what you want to do: -

It is great if you know what you want to do.  If you are still at school it is best to speak to an adviser as they will help you organise your career.  If you have left school then it would be a good idea to speak to your parent/s or guardian/s as they will help you find the correct courses at college/university you will need.  Or you can contact a college/university yourself and ask for a prospectus (a book on courses) which will tell you everything you need for that course.
