Smoking

If you have diabetes you are at more risk of problems occurring by smoking.  It can cause long term poor control, increased blood sugars and unhealthy life-style, especially if you do not exercise a lot.  Smoking can cause all different types of problems from short-term to long-term problems and even affects your social lifestyle.  Smoking can cause the following: -

  • Lung Cancer
  • Bad breath and smelly clothes
  • High blood pressure
  • Premature wrinkles
  • Decreased blood flow to the skin

If you have diabetes we would recommend the following: -

  • Make every effort not to start smoking
  • Do not let your friends persuade you to smoke
  • Explain to your friends why it is so dangerous to smoke
  • If you start smoking speak to your GP or phone Quitline and make every effort to stop
  • Discuss with your Specialist Nurses if you are uncertain what to do

You also have to take into account how bad it is for the environment and that it can damage other peoples health who do not smoke.

If you are planning a pregnancy or are pregnant it can also harm your baby.  If you need some advice on how to stop, you can get help and support from your GP, Diabetes Team or you can alternatively call Quitline on 0800 002200 or visit www.quit.org.uk

Don't forget that nicotine in cigarettes is very addictive and very expensive.

If you are under the age of 16

do you know it is illegal to smoke!!

Remember smoking can kill!!
