1.18 The Police, the Coroner, and the Law
Police Statements – If in the course of your work you are required to give a statement to the police, Karen Tennant will provide you with a photocopy of the notes and a statement form, along with a form to claim your fee which is currently £32 approx. Your senior colleagues will give you advice to help you prepare a police statement. Get a SENIOR to review your first one or two reports.
Reporting Deaths to the Coroner
The Coroner’s officer is contactable via switchboard. Deaths under the following circumstances should be reported to the Coroner’s Office. These are reported every morning by the Clinical Fellow on duty for CDU. This must be done before 9 am.
Essentially all deaths occurring or confirmed in the A&E department must be referred to the coroner. Where the cause if death is clear it may be possible to provide a death certificate, but only with the permission of the coroner.
Patients who are brought in dead must be seen by a doctor who should confirm the death before the body is taken to the mortuary. A record should be made on the Accident & Emergency card.
