St James' ED General Management
Induction Course – This is held during the first and second weeks of your post (half the group in week one and half in week two). Details will be given on the first introductory day. Your attendance is compulsory at these lectures.
Weekly SHO Teaching Sessions – There is a weekly Thursday afternoon postgraduate teaching session (1430 hrs –1700 hrs). Details of the organisation and contents will be given to you on the first day of your post. The session is supervised by an ED Consultant and includes talks by guest speakers and by ED Consultants.
Weekly Clinical Governance Meetings and Audit – These are held on Thursday’s 1315 hrs – 1400 hrs. The SHOs are not expected to be formally involved in the departmental audit programme but are encouraged to do so. An audit can be done in conjunction with the SHO’s Project as part of a multi-disciplinary team. A middle grade doctor usually leads each team.
In addition, the Clinical Governance meetings also have Mortality and Morbidity components as well as critical incident reporting, case presentations and evidence based topic reviews. All staff are encouraged to attend these whenever possible.
Courses – These include ALS, ATLS, APLS and PALS. During your post you are expected to attend at least one of these, the details and dates of the courses available can be had from Gill Wright (ED Secretary).
Miscellaneous – Daily X-ray Reporting and Audit
The radiologists report all ED X-rays on a daily basis. Any errors are audited by the Accident & Emergency SpR, who will take appropriate action. This may include feedback to you as an educational exercise. Advice on interpretation and choice of further imaging can be sought from the middle grade and senior A&E staff in the first instance.
