5.1 Paediatric Department Details

The Paediatric A & E department
Dr Maya Naravi, Anessa Rush 2004

The Paediatric A & E department is open between 9am and midnight 7 days a week.

Paediatric soft tissue injury review clinics are held daily from approximately 10am to 11.30am 5 days a week, these are covered by the middle grade & / or Consultant in charge.
Paediatric clinical guidelines (blue folder) and special needs folders for those children with complex conditions (orange folder in resus) are available within the department.
Paediatric medicine and paediatric surgery departments accept all children under the age of 16 years.  Paediatric Medicine will accept complex chronic cases who have been seen by a Paediatrician and are over the age of 16 years.

Paediatric Liaison Sister

A Paediatric Liaison Sister is based in the department from 8am till 4pm , Monday to Friday. Her role is to review the A&E attendances of children up to the age of 16 years. This can highlight certain trends and identify children and families under stress and in need of support services. One of her responsibilities is to inform health care staff in the community, in line with recommendations from the Department of Health. She can obtain background information about children and families where professionals have concerns. This includes making enquiries of the Child Protection Register and establishing whether families are known to Social Services.

Approximately 60 - 70 children a day pass through this department. It is not always possible to review attendances on the day following a child’s visit to the department, therefore the Liaison Sister may not see the child’s card for a few days.

Cause for concern sheet

If you have been unable to speak to the Liaison Sister and you wish her to follow up a child with a visit by a Health Visitor, Midwife etc then please complete a Cause for Concern Sheet with your specific requests. Please note that it is not the responsibility of the Liaison Sister to resolve your Child Protection Concerns. You are individually responsible for referring to the Paediatric Registrar and even considering referring to Social Services. (Please consult the Paediatric Injury Risk Assessment Tool, see 2.1).
