Two vessel umbilical cord (as a result of a single umbilical artery)

Definition

Single umbilical cord artery (rather than normal double)
Incidence 6:1000 live births
Diagnosis Ultrasound appearances of cord or bladder (usually vessel either side)
Gestation at diagnosis 12 weeks onwards
Known chromosomal or genetic association Yes, seen in association with trisomy 18 or 13. NOT trisomy 21.
Further investigations Karyotype is associated with other risk factors for chromosomal abnormality.  If normal consider serial growth scans as 15% associated with IUGR.
Differential Diaganosis None
Prognosis Excellent if isolated
Recurrance risk Low
