Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD)

Definition

Central heart defect involving atrial and ventricular septums and their connecting valves
Incidence 0.11-0.36:1000 live births (higher in second trimester)
Diagnosis Ultrsound
Gestation at diagnosis 16-20 weeks
Known chromosomal or genetic association Yes, 40% of cases have trisomy 21, 20% have trisomy 18,13 or heterortaxy snydrome
Further investigations Karyotype +/- Fetal Echocardiogram
Differential Diaganosis

Isolated ASD

VSD

Heterotaxy

Prognosis Usually require surgery at 4-6 months 5% operative mortality
Recurrance risk 3%
