Cleft Lip/Palate

Definition

Failure of lip/palate closure resulting in a defect
Incidence 1.5:1000 (commoner in asian population)
Diagnosis Ultrasound (though detection rate only ?%). 4D ultrasound may improve detection rate
Gestation at diagnosis 18-20 weeks
Known cause, chromosomal or genetic association Infections (rubella), teratogens (valproate), chromosomal (rare for isolated lip, commoner if includes palate or midline cleft (~50%), but other abnormalities usually present).
Further investigations Karyotype if older mother, midline, or other abnormalities
Differential Diaganosis

Amniotic band syndrome, facial tumours

Prognosis Excellent if isolated
Recurrance risk 3%
