Cleft Lip/Palate
Definition |
Failure of lip/palate closure resulting in a defect |
| Incidence | 1.5:1000 (commoner in asian population) |
| Diagnosis | Ultrasound (though detection rate only ?%). 4D ultrasound may improve detection rate |
| Gestation at diagnosis | 18-20 weeks |
| Known cause, chromosomal or genetic association | Infections (rubella), teratogens (valproate), chromosomal (rare for isolated lip, commoner if includes palate or midline cleft (~50%), but other abnormalities usually present). |
| Further investigations | Karyotype if older mother, midline, or other abnormalities |
| Differential Diaganosis | Amniotic band syndrome, facial tumours |
| Prognosis | Excellent if isolated |
| Recurrance risk | 3% |
