Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Definition

Fetal abnormalities as a results of maternal alcohol consumption
Incidence Dependent on population studied
Diagnosis Ultrasound features of symmetrical growth restriction in thrid trimester
Gestation at diagnosis Cannot be fully diagnosed before birth
Known cause, chromosomal or genetic association Alcohol consumption.  Unknown what level required to produce syndrome
Further investigations None
Differential Diaganosis Other causes of symmtrically small fetuses
Prognosis Very varied.  Usually associated with behavioural problems and lower intelligence
