Definition |
Herniation of the abdominal contents through a defect in the abdominal wall |

| Diagnosis | Ultrasound features of bowel and abdominal contents outside of abdomen and separate from umbilical cord insertion |
| Gestation at diagnosis | 12 weeks onwards (physiological hernia maybe present prior to this) |
| Known chromosomal or genetic association | None |
| Further investigations | Serial scans to detect IUGR/bowel dilatation |
| Differential Diaganosis | Omphalocele |
| Prognosis | Good. Requires delivery in paediatric surgery hospital and operation to repair defect in the first few hours of life, but overall 95% long term survival |
