Gastroschisis

Definition

Herniation of the abdominal contents through a defect in the abdominal wall
Incidence 1:4000
Diagnosis Ultrasound features of bowel and abdominal contents outside of abdomen and separate from umbilical cord insertion
Gestation at diagnosis 12 weeks onwards (physiological hernia maybe present prior to this)
Known chromosomal or genetic association None
Further investigations Serial scans to detect IUGR/bowel dilatation
Differential Diaganosis

Omphalocele

Prognosis Good. Requires delivery in paediatric surgery hospital and operation to repair defect in the first few hours of life, but overall 95% long term survival
Recurrance risk Low
