Jejunal (or ileal) Atresia

Definition

One or more areass of stenosis or atresia involving small bowel
Incidence 0.3/1000
Diagnosis Ultrasound showing dilated loops ("Triple bubble") of bowel with hyperperistalsis
Gestation at diagnosis Usually only late second or third trimester
Known cause, chromosomal or genetic association May be associated with fetal hypotension caused by cocaine use, but more commonly sporadic. Occasionally seen as autosomally recessive condition in certain families
Further investigations

Liquor volume monitoring in third trimester as risk of polyhydramnios

Parental cystic fibrosis screening

Differential Diaganosis

Anal atresia

Duodenal Atresia

Ovarian or Mesenteric cysts

Meconium Ileus

Prognosis Dependent on length of remaining bowel after neonatal surgery
Recurrance risk Low
