Jejunal (or ileal) Atresia
Definition |
One or more areass of stenosis or atresia involving small bowel |
| Incidence | 0.3/1000 |
| Diagnosis | Ultrasound showing dilated loops ("Triple bubble") of bowel with hyperperistalsis |
| Gestation at diagnosis | Usually only late second or third trimester |
| Known cause, chromosomal or genetic association | May be associated with fetal hypotension caused by cocaine use, but more commonly sporadic. Occasionally seen as autosomally recessive condition in certain families |
| Further investigations | Liquor volume monitoring in third trimester as risk of polyhydramnios Parental cystic fibrosis screening |
| Differential Diaganosis | Anal atresia Duodenal Atresia Ovarian or Mesenteric cysts Meconium Ileus |
| Prognosis | Dependent on length of remaining bowel after neonatal surgery |
| Recurrance risk | Low |
