Mesenteric cyst

Definition

Cystic structure arising from the lymphatic sytem.  Usually found in the small bowel mesentery, but may also occur in solid organs
Incidence Rare
Diagnosis Ultrasound, often multilocular cysts with thin walls not involving the urinary tract
Gestation at diagnosis 18 weeks onwards
Known chromosomal or genetic association No, unknown cause
Further investigations Consider MRI if very large or involving organs
Differential Diaganosis

Enteric Duplication cyst

Ovarian Cyst

Meconium Pseudocyst

Prognosis Excellent, usally require neonatal resection
Recurrance risk Low
