Fetal Ovarian Cyst
Definition |
Benign cyst within fetal ovary(s) |
| Incidence | Unknown. Small "cysts" are found in up to 1/3 of infant girls |
| Diagnosis | Ultrasound showing cyst in lower abdomen/pelvis of female fetuses |
| Gestation at diagnosis | 24 weeks onwards (usually incidental finding during third trimester scan for other reasons) |
| Known chromosomal or genetic association | No |
| Further investigations | If large then follow ultrasouns follow up until delivery |
| Differential Diaganosis | Duplication cysts Mesenteric cysts Meconium pseudocyst |
| Prognosis | Excellent, if large >6cm may occasionally require in-utero drainage to prevent torsion and allow vaginal delivery. Resolve spontaneosly following delivery |
