Talipes (Clubfoot)

Definition

Malformation of foot and ankle bones resulting in foot rotated inwards or outwards
Incidence 1:1000 live births
Diagnosis Ultrasound characteristic appearance
Gestation at diagnosis 12 weeks onwards
Known chromosomal or genetic association

Yes, 30% associated with chromosomal abnormality (Trisomy 18). In such cases other abnormalities are nearly always present.

Talipes is also associated with Neural Tube defects

Further investigations Karyotype if not isolated
Differential Diaganosis

Rockerbottom foot

Ectrodactyly

Amniotic Bands

Prognosis Excellent if isolated (may require surgery)
Recurrance risk Low
