Toxoplasmosis

Definition

Transplacental infection with the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii
Incidence Unknown in UK
Diagnosis

Ultrasound features including

  • Random calcifications particularly intracranial
  • IUGR
  • Echogenic bowel
  • Ventriculomegaly
Gestation at diagnosis 18 weeks onwards
Known cause, chromosomal or genetic association Toxoplasma gondii
Further investigations TORCH+parvovirus maternal blood screen.

Other causes of echogenic bowel

Prognosis If infection occurs in first trimester likely outcome miscarriage or severe abnormalities (transmission 2-10% of cases). If later in pregnancy higher chance of congenital infection, but lower chance of abnormalities.  If brain looks normal on ultrasound outlook is good.
Recurrance risk Very low
