Truncus Arteriosus

Definition

Single large vessel leaving heart (rather than the usual two)
Incidence 0.006/1000 live births
Diagnosis Ultrasound
Gestation at diagnosis 18-22 weeks
Known cause, chromosomal or genetic association Yes, 40% of live borns have Di George syndrome; also associated with maternal diabetes
Further investigations Detailed anatomy scan of remaining fetal anatomy (particularly face) and Fetal Echocardiogram
Differential Diaganosis

Pulmonary Atresia with VSD

Tetralogy of Fallot

Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

Prognosis Good. Requires early surgical repair 5% operative mortality
Recurrance risk 1%
