The Adult Liver Unit, Leeds
Welcome to the adult liver unit website. The purpose of this site is to provide information for clinicians and GP’s looking after people with a liver condition, and people who are in anyway affected by liver disease.
The first liver transplant in Leeds was carried out by the late Professor Geoffrey Giles, who sadly died in 1992. The adult liver unit was opened in 1988 as a four bedded unit jointly managed by Professor Giles and the then Professor of Medicine, Monty Losowsky.
Since its inception the unit has gone from strength to strength, and is now the third largest liver transplant unit in the United Kingdom. The core of such success is the individuals that make up the Multi-Disciplinary Team. Today the adult liver unit based at St.James’s Hospital in Leeds, serves as a supra regional referral unit with a referral base comprising a population of approximately 10 million, covering Yorkshire, North Wales, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and the East Coast Counties.
