The Adult Liver Unit (ward 83)
The Adult Liver Unit has been consecutively awarded the Charter Mark for its excellence of service since 1995 and is led by a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team with a wide background of knowledge. The ward is on the training circuit for medical students, student nurses and doctors in training.
In December 2009, the Unit moved to new facilities situated in Bexley wing, ward 83. The Unit’s bed base has increased to 32 beds, of which 22 remain as the supra-regional referral centre for care of patients with hepatobilary disorders. The ward cares for a mixture of patients with both high and low dependency needs.
We provide services, treatment and management for:
- Acute and chronic liver disorders ranging from investigation of deranged liver function to life threatening acute liver failure
- Transplant assessment, click here for further information
- Assessment for Living Donor Liver Transplantation
- Post liver transplant care, management and discharge planning, for further information click here
Twice weekly multidisciplinary team meetings are held to discuss and debate individualised care and treatment options. Patients receive full information regarding their condition to enable them to make informed decisions and choices and have access to a social worker and patient support group.
Following a liver transplant some patients maybe transferred to their local hospital to be nearer to home, if their recovery is prolonged. For further information to support discharge from the liver unit following transplantation click here

Nursing Staff Development
The Adult Liver Unit provides, within a structured personal and professional framework, a comprehensive induction programme for new nursing staff that reflects both Trust and local requirements.
There is a tailored supernumerary period to allow individuals to understand the diversity of patients’ needs and liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team to experience the unique blend of specialist medical and surgical care for acute and chronic hepatobiliary disorders and transplantation.
We have an established preceptor and mentorship programme, and individual workbooks to support new staff through the initial development phase. Our aim is to support and develop new and existing staff with knowledge and skill acquisition.
The Adult Liver Unit is proactive in supporting staff to continue studying at diploma, degree and masters level. We also access local, national and international conferences.
The Unit has worked in partnership with the University of Leeds to develop an accredited hepatobiliary course. These liver modules are run at level 2 (diploma) and level 3 (degree) and cover a wide range of liver diseases and the underlying pathophysiology.
