Newly Diagnosed

If you have just been told you have motor neurone disease you may feel a range of emotions. Please be assured this is a normal reaction to the news. It is important to remember people with MND can experience very different symptoms and you must try not to compare yourself with anyone else who may have the disease. The process by which the diagnosis is made can be straightforward or slow and complex and you may want to talk about this with a professional.

This web site covers all of the symptoms which may be experienced and you may only want to read about those relevant to you.

If you are newly diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease you may wish to speak to someone personally. Please feel free to contact the care centre on 0113 392 6078. Alternatively you may wish to call MND connect. This is a confidential helpline set up by the MNDA. The number is 08457 626262

Getting help

You may have difficulties performing tasks either at work, around the house or getting out and about. It may be useful to discuss this with someone. Your GP or the care centre will be able to help you make contact with the most appropriate professional.

Benefits

Depending on the type of difficulties you have you may be entitled to benefits. You may wish to contact your benefits agency or welfare rights department who can advise you regarding any entitlements.

Employment

There are schemes to help you get to work and keep working for as long as you are able. You may wish to discuss any difficulties you are having with your employer.

Driving

When you have been given your diagnosis you should inform the DVLA and your car insurance company. This should not prevent you from driving.
