Introductory Certificate in Management

Course Outline

 

CMI Introductory Certificate in Management - comprises of a number of taught sessions and the completion of tasks surrounding these. The Study sessions are based at the NVQ Centre at St James’s University Hospital. The course is run in conjunction with Park Lane College Business School. This course is funded by the NVQ Centre and is offered at no cost to the individual.

 

Suitability of this course - The course is suitable for those working in Support Services. It is suitable for established managers who wish to underpin their role with a related qualification and those wishing to develop management skills who are not currently in a management role. Unfortunately Registered Healthcare Professionals are not funded to undertake this course

 

Entry requirements -  There are no entry requirements but a functional level of literacy and numeracy is advisable. Candidates on this course may have to complete some assignments in their own time and all applicants must have the support of their manager.   

  

This course is designed to assist the attendee in developing the skills of a first line manager.

The program structure is designed to meet the following KSF Dimensions:

  

KSF Dimension 2 Personal and people development Level 2 Develop own skills and knowledge and provide information to others to help their development

 

KSF Dimension 5 Quality Level 2 Maintain quality in own work and encourage others to do so

 

KSF Dimension 4 Service improvement Level 2 Make changes in own practice and offer suggestions for improving services

 

KSF Dimension G5 Services and project management Level 1&2 (depending on role) Assist with the organisation of services and/or projects Organise specific aspects of services and/or projects

 

KSF Dimension G6 People management Level 1&2 (depending on role) Supervise people’s work Plan, allocate and supervise the work of a team

All studiy sessions below are from 1 - 4pm usually on a Thursday afternoon at the NVQ Centre

 

Management Role and Values

Content: the group identifies the core skills of the manager's role and their own values and beliefs in relation to these.

Looking critically at workplace problems

Content: In this session some practical tools for identifying the root cause of work problems and critical thinking skills to resolve them

Customers who are they and what do they want

Content: The study session covers the important issue of identifying customers and their needs and investigates who they are and identifying what they need.

Objective objectives

Content: This session covers SMART(ER) objectives, their importance and how to write them

Management skills and you

Content: Looks at the essential qualities of a manager and how  to develop these.

Report writing

Content: This study session looks at how to write & structure reports in a standard industry format

Your team skills and you

Content: This covers a managers role in leading the team and the knowledge and skills to achieve this

Customers, what do we need to do better

Content: Looks at common complaints that are made against the organisation and covers what can we learn from this and what must we do better

Projects why do we need them and how do we go about them

Content:  Projects are an important part of improving services, this session covers the basic principles involved in project work

Innovation

Content: What is innovation, why is it vital for organisations to do it and the steps to achieve this
