Course Structure and Content
The programme is accredited with the West and North Yorkshire Open College Network at Level 2 (GCSE level) with 18 credits. It is a 50 week training course which includes built-in review sessions for portfolio work, additional computer based training and revision.
The training sessions will be held on Thursday mornings (September 2006 – January 2007 8.45-10.45 am or 11.00-1.00 pm) and Tuesdays (February – October 2007 1-5 pm at The Learning Centre, Trust HQ, SJUH
There are a number of specialist trainers who deliver sessions giving expert training and up-to-date information on issues such as Medical Records, Patient Administration and Complaints to name but a few.
The course is delivered and assessed in 3 modules:

Medical Terminology training is delivered via a computer based training package with the full support of staff in The Learning Centre and assisted training and revision from the course Tutor. For content, see below.
Medical Terminology CBT
This package is designed to give the participants a basic understanding of the structure and application of medical terms and phrases together with basic anatomy knowledge. It is a computer based training package that allows participants to work at their own pace through a series of modules. Each module concentrates on a specific aspect of medical terminology building up levels of understanding step by step. An examination at the end of the course gives a percentage score, the pass rate being 80%.
Unit A – Basics of Medical Terminology
Unit A covers the basics of medical terminology. It will give the trainee an introduction to the most common roots, prefixes and suffixes which make up medical terms.
Unit B – The Integumentary System
This unit deals with medical terminology that relates to the skin. The training is particularly necessary for staff being placed in the following departments:
Dermatology
Plastic Surgery
Unit C – The Musculo-Skeletal System
Deals with structures and systems associated with bones and muscles and the terminology relating to the diagnosis and treatment of associated diseases, e.g., Rheumatology, Rehabilitation, Plastic Surgery, Orthopaedics, Trauma and Accident & Emergency.
Unit D – The Circulatory System
This section deals with the terminology relates to the heart, the blood system and arteries as well as associated disorders. Knowledge of this terminology is appropriate for working in departments such as Cardiac, Cardio-thoracic, Radiology/Oncology and Care of the Elderly.
Unit E – The Respiratory System
Deals with the structures related to the lungs and breathing and terminology associated with diagnosis and treatment of related diseases. This Unit is relevant to most specialities, General Medicine, Thoracic Medicine and Care of the Elderly.
Unit F – The Gastro-Intestinal System
This unit teaches terminology associated with the digestive system, the liver and bladder. This knowledge would be particularly necessary for the following departments:
Gastro-enterology/Urology
General Surgery
Elderly Medicine
Unit G – The Endrocrine System
This unit teaches terminology associated with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders/diseases of glands and the hormones related to them. This is particularly relevant to positions within General Medicine, specifically endocrinology.
Unit H – The Nervous System
Deals with terminology related to the structure, function and dysfunction of the brain and nerve cells. This relates to departments such as Neurology, Plastic Surgery and Psychiatry.
Unit I – The Genito-urinary System
This section teaches terminology related to the kidney, the male and female urinary systems and the reproductive systems as well as associated disorders.
Unit J – The Special Senses
This unit teaches terminology related to the ears, nose and eyes. This section is particularly relevant for the following departments:
Ear, nose and throat
Ophthalmic
Keyboard Skills Training
We offer various stages of accredited keyboard skills training including touch typing exercises, documentation layout and audio-typing tuition and practice.
