In House Medical Secretary Training Program
Awarding Body: The programme is accredited with the West and North Yorkshire Open College Network at Level 2 (GCSE level) with 18 credits.

Duration / Frequency: September 2006 – January 2007 (Medical Terminology Training)
& February – October 2007 (Skills and Knowledge training + keyboard skills)
Study Hours: The training sessions will be held on Thursday mornings (September 2006 – January 2007 8.45-10.45 am or 11.00-1.00 pm) and Tuesdays (February – October 2007 1-5 pm at The Learning Centre, Trust HQ, SJUH. The Learning Centre, Trust HQ St James's university Hospital
Entry Requirements: You must be working in an administrative role within the Trust
Description
This programme is specifically aimed at equipping existing clerical, administration and secretarial staff from within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust with the knowledge and skills they need to carry out the role of the medical secretary. For the course structure click here
The requirements for the programme fall into 2 headings – personal and support.
Personal
- Candidates will be expected to have a good standard of literacy and numeracy (initial assessment prior to interview)
- An interest in using the skills and knowledge that will be gained throughout the programme to enable progression into a medical secretarial post
- The ability and willingness to undertake work independently and to work collaboratively with other delegates on the programme.
- The personal commitment to undertake completion of the whole programme (50 weeks). This may involve personal and work time (2-3 hours of homework per week)
- Allocation of adequate study time (approximately one half day per week over 50 weeks to attend the Learning Centre)
Support
- Adequate support from your supervisor/manager throughout the duration of the programme. This will involve verification of work for authenticity or written witness testimony.
