Working in conjunction with Park Lane College the NVQ Centre is pleased to be able to offer this introductory course in Nutrition and Healthy Eating. The qualification is fully funded and therefore free for staff to study. Accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) this is part of a nationally recognised qualifications framework.
The Course consists of 3 units.

| Unit 2 | Consider nutritional needs of a variety of individuals |
| Unit 3 | Use food and nutritional information to plan a healthy diet |
By the end of the course you should have gained:
- An understanding of the principles of healthy eating and the role of food in maintaining health
- Increased confidence in planning and achieving a healthy diet
- An understanding of how an individuals dietary requirements change throughout their life
- An awareness of dietary requirements of particular individuals
- An understanding of food labelling and the ability to use information from food labels
- A basis for further study / career development
Due to the massive success of this course we are running a second intake starting at the end of June. This course is fully funded and as such there is an expectation that if you enrol on the course you will complete it. All work should be completed in your own time and there will be approximately three tutor sessions during this time. It is anticipated that you will be able to complete the course comfortably within 3 months.
Unit 1 - Explore Principles of Nutrition & Health
In this unit you will learn what healthy eating is all about and why eating healthily is very important.
Content
This unit contains five sections:
What is a healthy diet?
The five food groups
Nutrients and health
Principles of a healthy diet
Healthy food preparation
Aims
When you have worked through this unit you should be able to:
Explain how diet is linked to health
Identify factors involved in planning a healthy diet
Identify the different nutrients in food and their role in maintaining health
Identify factors involved in healthy food preparation
Assessment
There is an assessment at the end of the unit that you should complete once you have worked your way through all the sections and the learning activities. When you have completed the assessment for this unit, you should submit it to your tutor who will give you detailed written feedback on your work.
Unit 2 - Consider Nutritional Needs of a Variety of Individuals
In this unit you will learn about the nutritional needs of people from young people to older people and understand why there are barriers to healthy eating. The last section of the unit shows food sources of vitamins and minerals.

Nutritional needs of older people
Special dietary requirements
Barriers to healthy eating

When you have worked through this unit you should be able to:
Identify the nutritional needs of adults, children and adolescents
Identify food sources of vitamins and minerals
Recognise the nutritional needs which older people may be at risk of developing
Recognise and understand the importance of special dietary requirements
Recognise barriers to healthy eating
Assessment
There is an assessment at the end of the unit that you should complete once you have worked your way through all the sections and the learning activities. When you have completed the assessment for this unit, you should submit it to your tutor who will give you detailed written feedback on your work.
Unit 3 - Use Food and Nutritional Information to Plan a Healthy Diet
In this unit you will learn about special dietary requirements, nutritional extremes, how to interpret nutritional claims on food labels and consider some key food-related issues.

Interesting facts about nutrition
Aims
When you have worked your way through this unit you should be able to:
Understand what information must be provided on food products and interpret nutrition data on labels
Have an improved understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of using food additives
Discuss nutrition information
Assessment
There is an assessment at the end of the unit that you should complete once you have worked your way through all the sections and the learning activities. When you have completed the assessment for this unit, you should submit it to your tutor who will give you detailed written feedback on your work.
