Skills boost for NHS staff in Leeds

Patients in Leeds Teaching Hospitals will benefit from a new pledge by 26 of the region’s NHS Trusts to help their staff learn new skills.

The skills pledge will help staff to fulfil their potential and offer the best possible service to patients

Members of staff will be able to develop their basic skills, including literacy and numeracy, and work towards relevant, valuable qualifications to at least Level 2 (equivalent to 5 good GCSEs). The purpose is to ensure that all staff are skilled, competent and able to make a full contribution to the success of the NHS in Yorkshire and the Humber.

Director of Human Resources, Rachael Allsop, from Leeds Teaching Hospitals Said:

“The new pledge supports the Trust’s commitment to realising the potential talents in all staff.  We are currently supporting more than 300 staff either through the Trust’s own training centre or in conjunction with local colleges to develop new skills and gain at least level 2 qualifications. We hope to be able to extend this programme in partnership with other agencies.  In future, patients should receive an improved experience provided by more highly skilled staff who will be generating greater opportunities for their career development through the acquisition of additional and new skills.”

The skills pledge has been signed by 26 trusts from across NHS Yorkshire and the Humber.

NHS Yorkshire and the Humber Chief Executive Margaret Edwards said:

“This is great news for patients and those working in the NHS. Making the most of our staff’s abilities and helping them develop their skills mean we can provide better health care for patients. Non clinical members of staff play a huge role in the NHS making it possible for medical staff to do their job. I’m delighted so many trusts have decided to sign up to this pledge and we hope to see every trust in Yorkshire and the Humber signed up in the near future.”
