What is an NHS Trainee?

Anyone can be an NHS Trainee. It is someone who wishes to undertake training and development in a work based role.

How do I learn?

You will learn during your work experience. You will also attend study days in the NVQ Centre where you will have opportunity to develop the knowledge required for your chosen job role. For some occupations it may also be necessary to attend one of the local colleges and or universities to gain the required knowledge.

What qualifications will I gain?

You will develop a learning programme specific to your requirements taking into account your previously acquired qualifications. These will be a variety of qualifications e.g. Key skills, NVQ’s and BTEC awards in you relevant field.

Do I need qualifications to apply for a traineeship post?

You do not require any qualifications to apply for a traineeship post. If you have qualifications these may help you to achieve your goal. You will be assessed on you basic Literacy and Numeracy skills at interview. The tutors will then advise you about your needs in order for you to achieve the standard required for your choice of programme. You will need to demonstrate an insight into the traineeships and which pathway you feel is most appropriate for you and be able to demonstrate a commitment to learn. This will be assessed at review or interview.

Will I be paid during the traineeship?

If you are employed by a Health Care Trust and will be undertaking your qualification while working you will continue to be paid on the same contract.

If you are hoping to join the Trust as an apprentice you will be given a training allowance. or the EMA The amount of the training allowance may vary.

Will I wear a uniform?

You will be required to wear the appropriate dress for the area that you will be working in. You will be expected to provide appropriate foot wear to comply with the dress code. You may be provided with safety equipment or uniform as required.

What happens when I have completed my traineeship?

You will be given guidance and support to apply for posts within the relevant work areas. If your training programme is to gain entry to pre-registration Nurse training, you will access the intake nearest to your location following successful application through university clearing.
