About us
The Obstetrical Brachial Plexus Unit includes:-
Ward 27
This is a 16 bedded children’s
plastic and orthopaedic surgery ward. The child will be admitted to this ward
the day before surgery and on average will stay a couple of days after their
operation. A parent is allowed to stay overnight on the ward with the child.
Children’s Plastic Surgery Dressing Clinic
This clinic is linked to the ward and children will return around four weeks
after surgery. They will have their wounds and dressings assessed by nursing
staff and if necessary medical staff, their cowl will be removed and they will
be seen by a physiotherapist to reinstate passive exercises.
Children’s Hand Clinic
In this clinic children will have the function of their arm regularly re-assessed
by a multi-disciplinary team of staff. This team includes medical staff (Consultants
and Registrars), Nursing staff, Clinical Psychologists, Physiotherapists and
Occupational Therapists. Assessments in this clinic will aim to establish the
level of recovery and whether therapy or surgery (this may include microvascular
free muscle transfers, tendon transfers, osteotomies and arthrodesis) aimed
at improving function is indicated. Frequently as the child’s arm develops
secondary contractures can occur at the shoulder region and it may be necessary
to perform surgery at this stage (predominantly form two years of age +).
This unit also has access to Imaging services and Neurophysiology services.
