Information on the Dispensing service available at St. James's University Hospital
Trust patients
The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Optometry department offers a spectacle
dispensing service (by appointment) to all the Trust's optometry
and ophthalmology patients. This service is provided by a team of qualified
dispensing opticians who have particular skills and experience in dealing with
hospital eye service patients.
The patients who would benefit from using this service include those with higher
prescriptions or complex dispensing problems. Complex dispensing situations
include:
- Paediatric aphakia
- anisometropia
- patients with unusual facial characteristics
- patients with dementia or mental health problems
- patients requiring ptosis specs
Specialised work such as the supply of spectacle mounted low vision aids and safety spectacles is also carried out.
It is worth noting that the LTHT optometry department pricing policy has been structured to avoid penalising patients for having high or complex prescriptions. Any profit that is made goes directly to the Trust to be ploughed back into patient care. It is also worth noting that there is a direct saving to the Trust where a patient issued with a Hospital voucher chooses to have their spectacle prescription made up by the dispensing service.
Whilst patients can be informed of the Trust dispensing service all LTHT patients are free to choose between using this service or purchasing their spectacles at their usual optician's practice.
Trust staff
As well as ophthalmology patients Trust staff are also welcome to purchase their spectacles from the LTHT dispensing opticians, they do need an up to date (within two years) spectacle prescription from their own optometrist. Minor repairs and adjustments can also be carried out for Trust staff although it is advisable for Trust staff to contact the department in advance on Ext 64742 to avoid the busiest times.

The LTHT dispensing opticians department is positioned on the St. James's site within the main eye clinic, ground floor, Chancellor Wing.
