Information on the provision of Low Vision Aids in the Hospital
Low Vision Aid (LVA) assesssments
What is an LVA assessment?
An LVA assessment involves working with a patient's existing vision, assessing
visual performance and ability to perform daily living tasks and providing advice
and any optical aids which may help, these might include high powered spectacles,
hand magnifiers, stand magnifiers, spectacle mounted and hand held telescopes.
Advice on specific adaptations to daily living, lighting and strategies to improve
visual performance may also be provided.
Who is entitled to an LVA assessment?
LVA assessments are provided to all patients who have been registered blind (Severely sight impaired) or partially sighted (Sight impaired) by a Consultant Ophthalmologist, usually in the specialist LVA clinics.
Non registered patients encountering difficulties with deteriorating vision may also be seen in these clinics.
Patients are issued Low Vision aids, hand magnifiers, Stand magnifiers, spectacle mounted and hand held telescopes on an extended loan basis (i.e. at no charge to the patient).
Where appropriate other agencies may be contacted regarding individual patients e.g. Rehabilitation Officers/ Educational support services etc.
