Highlights to date inclue:
  • Over 1000 NHS staff across all specialties trained in service improvement techniques
  • A Service Improvement Toolkit has been produced and issued to over 300 NHS staff
  • The Service Improvement Toolkit was highly commended at the West Yorkshire NHS Modernisation Awards 2005, a finalist in the Health Service Jounal Awards (2006) and a finalist in the Guardian Public Service Awards (2006)
  • From a position where many patients waited over 12 hours in Accident and Emergency for a bed after a decision was made to admit them to hospital, 84% of patients at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust now have a bed allocated within an hour
  • Average patient times in Accident & Emergency Departments has reduced from over 4 hours to around 2 ¼ hours
  • Development and implementation of care pathways across specialties have ensured that patients receive equitable evidence based care
  • The implementation of the Referral Booking Service has reduced the number of referral access points across within the Trust by over 500 in the last 6 months
  • Capacity and demand analysis for the dispensing of take home medicines led to redesign work within the Pharmacy Department. This resulted in improved turnaround times and reduced delays in patient discharges
  • Improvement design work in the area of emergency surgery has led to better preoperative planning and scheduling, and the implementation of a care pathway for fractured neck of femur. This resulted in a reduction in the number of cancelled operations
  • Development of a tracking system to allows GPs to follow the status of a patient referral to a consultant in secondary care, reducing clinical risk, improving the patient experience and reducing time spent chasing referrals
  • Improvement and redesign work in the area of Clinical Support Services has led to the reduction of missing and damaged items. The implementation of a policy and set of procedures for the fast tracking of kit improved communication between theatres and Clinical Support Services
  • Improvement redesign work across theatre suites has resulted in a change to the way radiography is coordinated reducing delays during operations and patient anaesthesia time
  • The development and implementation of a guideline for blood requests and supply for the theatre suite at St James's Hospital has reduced blood product wastage within theatres, and reduced the number of trips to the blood bank by theatre staff
