Health Technology Assessment Master Class
Speeding up the adoption of innovative technologies: the value of health technology assessment in the NHS

All publicly funded health systems face the challenge of containing costs while providing universal access to health care. New technologies offer increased health benefits and potential future cost savings, but often these can only be achieved through increased short term costs of adoption. In order to secure reimbursement of a technology, the manufacturer needs to submit strong clinical and cost effectiveness data to demonstrate value for money. Formal health technology assessment (HTA) is now used in many countries to assist in the efficient allocation of healthcare funding.
The increasing emphasis on evidence-based, cost-effective purchasing of medical technologies has created the need to provide on-going training in health technology assessment to the industry and local decision makers. The Health Technology Assessment master class has been designed specifically to meet these needs.
Topics to be addressed
The master class will bring together health practitioners and managers, academics and researchers, and medical technology industry representatives to share views on health technology assessment.

NCRI Conference
All submitted
abstracts will be considered for both oral and poster presentation at the
2008 NCRI Cancer Conference. Young investigator awards will be provided
by the British Oncological Association (BOA) and the British Association
for Cancer Research (BACR).
This year the Conference features two dedicated proffered paper sessions,
offering researchers a superb opportunity to present their work to the UK
cancer research community. There will also be three poster sessions to maximise
opportunities for networking and sharing research.
Last year's Conference resulted in stories in over 80 major news sources,
including the BBC, Guardian, Times and Daily Mail through to the New Scientist,

NRES Researcher training days 2008-2009
NRES is committed to facilitating and promoting ethical research. NRES is rolling out, the very successful Researcher Training Day which gives researchers applying to NHS Research Ethics Committees (RECs) an opportunity to learn from REC members and NRES staff, about the process of ethical review and what RECs look for when reviewing research ethics applications. The day will provide guidance on completing successful applications, including the application form and interactive training sessions with a “REC tutor”.
The training days are very well attended and places are limited and will be allocated on a first come basis.

Research Funding - Dimbleby Cancer Care
Dimbelby cancer makes funds available each year for a number of research projects relating to the psychosocial needs of patients, their families and carers; to improved continuity of care and communications; and the general delivery of better support services to patients, their families and carers throughout the cancer journey.
The closing date for initial bids for research funding from Dimbleby Cancer Care is 21th November 2008.

U KCRN clinical studies portfolio
UKCRN is working to develop a high quality and balanced portfolio of trials
and other well designed studies.
Studies that are included in the UKCRN portfolio can benefit from the support
of UKCRN-funded staff working in Local Research Networks. This support might
range from publicising the study to help with R&D approval applications,
to the identification and recruitment of patients and will depend on the
resources available at individual sites.
Eligibility
The Department of Health has set out eligibility criteria for those studies
that can be included in the NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio. If
you are involved in any studies which you feel meet the Department of Health
eligiblity criteria and which do not currently appear on the UKCRN Portfolio
Database, please complete the minimum dataset proforma (available at http://www.ukcrn.org.uk/index/clinical/portfolio.html)
and email this to portfolio@ukcrn.org.uk.

Campaign Project Grant Applications : 11 January 2008
Breast Cancer Campaign is the only charity that specialises in funding breast cancer research throughout the UK and has recently extended its award schemes to researchers in the Republic of Ireland. The Charity is now inviting applications for project grants, to be awarded in May 2008. This funding is for postdoctoral scientists to undertake innovative projects which expand the levels of knowledge and expertise in breast cancer research in the UK. Awards not to exceed £65,000 per annum for up to three years In 2006, Campaign funded 34 research projects worth over £3.7 million and currently support 93 research projects throughout the UK worth over £11.4 million The closing date for applications is 11 January 2008.

Launch of National Research Ethics Service - NRES
The National Research Ethics Service (NRES) was launched on 1 April
2007. NRES will incorporate the Central Office for Research Ethics
Committees (COREC) and NHS Research Ethics Committees (RECs) in
England. NRES will continue to work with colleagues in Scotland,
Wales and Northern Ireland to maintain the established UK-wide framework
for ethical review of research.
From 1 April 2007 the COREC and NHS REC Application Form website
addresses will be changing. The NRES website can be found at: www.nres.npsa.nhs.uk.
The NHS REC Application Form's site will become: www.nresform.org.uk.
For an interim period the old sites will automatically redirect
you to the new ones.
NRES has published a series of guides for researchers: Guidance
for Applicants to NRES, Building on Improvement, Explaining Research,
Defining Research, Research Ethics Timeline. These can be downloaded
from the NRES website.

Health Services Research Workshop 20th Feb 2007
The launch of the new Department of Health (DH) Research & Development Strategy has changed the way research in the NHS is funded. Research monies are distributed across several funding streams via the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). The NIHR has several open competitive national funding streams that researchers must apply for. The key objective of the funding streams is to improve the quality, relevance and focus of research to the NHS and personal social services.

COREC and NHS R&D Forum launch integrated Site-Specific Information Form
Part
C of the REC application form has been merged with the national R&D
application form. The new form, known as the Site-Specific Information
(SSI) form, went live on the REC form system over the weekend of 13/14
January 2007. It will be used both for applying to local RECs for
site-specific assessment (SSA) where required, and for applying to
NHS R&D offices in England, Wales and Scotland.
The purpose of the combined form is explained in issue 2 of Developing
an Integrated Approval Process for Research in the NHS . Detailed
guidance for users is available on the REC
form system .
Guidance for RECs has been issued in Amendment
No. 2 to version 3 of the SOPs.
The SSI Form is under consultation until 31 March 2007. Comments should
be sent to commentsonform@corec.org.uk

Changes to the COREC form - sign off by Research Sponsor
Researchers will be aware that the COREC form has recently been updated to Version 5.3. One of the changes includes the requirement for a signature from the Research Sponsor for all the research project undergoing full REC review. This is in the implementation stages with full implementation in April 2007.
To enable the LTHT to fulfil it's requirements to ensure that each project we are sponsoring is signed off , we have amended the R&D Approval process slightly to ensure that we can extend sponsorship to projects appropriately.
Where LTHT is the Research Sponsor (for non-CTIMPs), please send a copy of the finalised documents which are be submitted to the REC. A list detailing what is required can be found on http://www.leedsth.nhs.uk/sites/research_and_development/sumbitrd.php
We will endeavour to review and sign off the REC form within 25 days of receipt of a valid application.
It is the Chief investigators responsibility to allow sufficient time for R&D Approval before submission to the REC.
