Introduction to R&D in LTHT
LTHT R&D Strategy
The United Kingdom has an outstanding record of scientific innovation. In health, it rests on mutual support between the NHS, Universities and bodies that fund high quality research and development (R&D).
R&D is essential for the advancement of healthcare and wealth creation through the development of intellectual property. The Trust is committed to:
- playing a leading role in NHS R&D
- encouraging staff to pursue high quality, ethical and relevant R&D
- the pursuit of evidence-based clinical practice and management, in a research-aware environment.

Research Activity & NHS R&D Programmes
Research activity in the organisation is organised into NHS R&D programmes that address the priorities or needs of the NHS. The programmes emphasise the translational and clinical aspects of research, including health services research and participation in high-quality clinical trials and clinical research networks, particularly where such activity contributes to the evidence-base for helath-care. The Trust recognises that its research portfolio should be inclusive and representative of the population it serves in terms of ethnic and other minority groups. The Trust also plays a supporting role in basic science R&D, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, particularly where such activity is likely to inform new clinical technologies within three to five years. The current portfolio of programmes includes:
- Clinical and Translational Research into Cancer Medicine and Pathology
- Clinical Dentistry and Oral Health
- Coronary Heart Disease Clinical Research Network
- Coronary Heart Disease Translational Research
- Development, Evaluation and Assessment of Medical and Health Technologies
- Diabetes, Endocrine and Vascular Research

Review of Programmes:
The quality of activity in each of these areas will be reviewed regularly, using a variety of metrics, including peer-reviewed publications, external grant income, the existence of formal partnership agreements, development of research capacity, good governance and programme review by external agencies
