Introduction to Research Governance

Research is essential to the promotion of health and well being. It needs to be managed well to ensure that risks are minimised and research is carried out to the highest ethical and scientific standards. Research Governance is aimed at continuous improvement of standards in research practice.

The Research Governance Framework sets out to define standards and good practice in research, across all aspects of healthcare. The Framework applies to all those who participate in, host, fund, manage or undertake research.

The Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care

The Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care was published by the Department of Health (DH) in early 2001. The Framework defines the broad principles of good research practice and aims to ensure that health and social care research is conducted to the highest scientific, ethical, and financial standards.

The Framework sets out transparent decision making processes, clear allocation of responsibilities and resources with robust monitoring arrangements. It supports both research and the researcher by reducing unacceptable variations in research practice, promoting good practice and learning from mistakes.

Knowledge of the framework is essential for all research and relevant managers.

The Framework describes:

  • Standards for research
  • Responsibilities and accountabilities of everyone involved in all stages of research
  • Monitoring and inspection of research.

LTHT Research Governance Policy

Research in Medicine and Health is both a corporate and individual activity. At a corporate level it must be managed appropriately to ensure

Within this framework the importance of ideas from individuals is crucial; it is these new and innovative ideas which will form the cornerstone to research which is seeking to resolve clinical problems.

The Trust's policy on Research Governance seeks to provide a framework for research which complies with good practice in research, without restricting the freedom of individual researchers to develop ideas which can improve clinical care. The policy is a component of the Trust Strategy for Research & Development.
