Wharfedale Hospital
<<Back to Strategic Projects Information
The new Wharfedale Hospital opened in October 2004 and was the first PFI project completed by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT). The Strategic Projects Office provided the project direction and led the team assembled to deliver the contract.
The new hospital was designed over two full floors and two half floors due to the topography of the site, it has an internal area of approx 9500m2. The Hospital provides 76 inpatient bed, theatres, day surgery, endoscopy, outpatients, therapies and diagnostics focussed on providing localised hospital provision for North West Leeds. The procurement phase took 19 months reaching Financial Close in September 2002 followed by a 2 year construction period. The Preferred Bidder on the project were BAM (formerly HBG Projects). The Project Agreement covers the construction and hard maintenance of the building for a 25 year period. The building was delivered to the agreed programme and was fully operational within a month of handover. Financially, the building was completed within the financial ceiling with no major cost variations or outstanding claims. The quality of construction and design has been of a high standard and has received ongoing positive feedback by both patients and staff. In 2004, the project was the runner up (highly commended) in the PFI Awards for projects under £25m
The Strategic Projects Office provided a key role in the delivery of the project not only regarding the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust inputs and PFI procurement, but also in dealing with a number of stakeholders including the public, the local council and local politicians who had campaigned for a new hospital.
