Conceived in the mid 1990s the development of the new oncology wing project evolved as the response to:

• Leeds Review of Acute Services – 1996
• Leeds Health Authority Review – 1997
• Strategic Outline Case – 1999
• Public Consultation – 2000

In addition, the project is intended to support the Trust in meeting the aims of the NHS Cancer Plan and national guidance associated with Improving Cancer Outcomes.

An Outline Business Case was produced and signed off by key project stakeholders in September 2001 with the stated aims of:

• providing a new wing on the St James’s University Hospital Site which:
• centralises non surgical oncology services on to an acute hospital site
• expands non surgical cancer services
• centralises specialist surgical services
• improves access to specialist diagnostic services
• provides a significantly enhanced environment
• supports a more comprehensive and integrated approach to oncology services provision
• delivering a significant investment in major equipment
• levering to clinical and clinical support services the benefits of being located on a major hospital associated with teaching and research
• increasing staffing levels
• increasing capacity to treat more patients
• reducing waiting times
• retaining access to local services where appropriate

The procurement phase of the project ended on 15 October 2004 when the Trust reached Financial Close with Catalyst Healthcare (Leeds) Limited and construction began on site.

The construction phase of the project is programmed to be complete on 14 December 2007 with clinical services programmed to become operational in early January 2008.
