Arranged over 12 floors the building has been constructed as four distinct zones:

  • Radiotherapy plinth – below ground level and comprising the 12 linear accelerator suites, 5 simulators, and supporting patient and staff accommodation.  This zone is supported by dedicated building and engineering systems and equipment
  • Ambulatory zone – arranged over the ground floor and level 1 providing the main entrance to the building, outpatient suites, imaging and diagnostic facilities and the building’s café, dining and retail facilities
  • Inpatient zone – located in the distinctive copper clad ward blocks, the inpatient areas are housed within purpose built accommodation that has been designed with the needs of patients in mind.  The facilities incorporate a blend of single rooms and multi bedded bays which have been designed to give patients control over lighting levels and temperature at each bed location.
  • High technology zone – forming the totality of the eastern block of the building this zone incorporates all elements of the building that require a heavily serviced environment in respect of specialist ventilation, heating and cooling and the like.  This zone houses the diagnostic and imaging equipment, offices, laboratories, teaching, seminar and conference facilities.

Building layout

Externally the building is supported by a plaza area which serves as a public space incorporating drop off in certain areas (visitor car and ambulance) for the Main Entrance. A seperate public entrance has been provided on Beckett Street which is served by a bus stop. A third discreet entrance is provided adjacent to the main reception to allow patients who are on trolleys or in wheelchairs and who do not wish to use the main entrances to be dropped off at the new wing.

Immediately adjacent and linked to the plaza area is the multi storey car park which is arranged over eight floors and incorporates controlled car parking for patients, staff and visitors.  The car park includes dedicated spaces for disabled users located at the same level as the main entrance to the new wing. Access and egress to the car park is barrier controlled and uses a pay on foot system.  Staff authorised to use the car park will be able to have their security pass programmed to afford them access to the facility.
