What Is Making Leeds Better?
The following is extracted from the Making Leeds Better web site. For more details click here>...
Health and Social Care in Leeds is already good. It could be even better.
Now, for the first time, all the key organisations in health and social care across Leeds have joined forced to develop a single vision for these services - and to make this vision a reality.
So Who Is Making Leeds Better?
The partner organisations in Making Leeds Better are the Leeds North West PCT ; Leeds North East PCT ; East Leeds PCT ; South Leeds PCT ; Leeds West PCT ; Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust ; Leeds Mental Health Teaching Trust ; West Yorkshire Metropolitan Ambulance Service Trust ; the Universities in Leeds; The West Yorkshire Strategic Health Authority ; West Yorkshire Primary Care Organisations, and is in cooperation with Leeds City Council . The Leeds Teaching Hospitals are not responsible for the content of external sites, including other NHS sites.
In addition, Making Leeds Better is supported by interested organisations and individuals from across West Yorkshire and beyond, in recognition that changes must benefit patients and service users throughout the region.
The Vision
Our vision is for a future where people who need health and social care get the best possible care and treatment in modern facilities closer to their own homes. Care and treatment that until now has only been available in hospitals will be provided by doctors, nurses and other health and social care staff working in the community.
Staff will be able to take advantage of the latest developments in medical science and technology, and in clinical practice - free from the limitations of old buildings and outdated ways of doing things.
When people do need hospital care they will get it in modern facilities truly fit for the 21st century.
But Why Do We Need a New Vision?
Some of the things that we want to change about the current way our health and social care services work are:
- There is no dedicated Children's & Maternity Hospital. This means that children - despite the excellent care provided by our highly trained and expert staff - are often looked after in buildings and places not suitable for their needs. This can make going to hospital an upsetting and frightening experience for some children.
- There is too much reliance on supplying care from hospitals. In Leeds, more people are admitted to hospital than people with similar problems in other cities. Up and down the country, people who have long term conditions already have much of their care provided nearer to, or actually in, their own homes. We need to be able to do this in Leeds. We need to be able to diagnose people's illnesses more quickly so treatment can start earlier and people won't have to be admitted to hospital. We also need to be able to offer people faster, more convenient and appropriate alternatives to hospital when they don't need complex treatments.
- Finally, not all of our premises - whether hospital or community based - are of a high enough standard, and some will not fit into our plans for use in the future.
What's The Aim?
To improve the health and well being of the people who use health and social services in Leeds by providing them with speedy access to high quality care and treatment that is responsive to their needs and provided in the best possible settings. This will be achieved by redesigning Care Pathways and developing new premises - including a new Children's & Maternity Hospital. All improvements must demonstrate value for money and be deliverable and affordable within the resources available.
What Does Making Leeds Better Include?
The scope of Making Leeds Better covers these Key Goals:
- Involving You - your opinions, your views, your voice
- A new Children's & Maternity Hospital
- Care Pathways - the journey you take across health and social care services in Leeds
- New facilities in your community
- Bringing hospital services together
- The Plan - to deliver the vision, to make it affordable
